With this victory, Tiger Woods became the first player to successfully defend the British Open title since Tom Watson in 1982-83.

 

He tied Walter Hagen for second on the professional majors won list with 11.

 

His major breakdown goes like this: Masters (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005); U.S. Open (2000, 2002), British Open (2000, 2005, 2006) and PGA Championship (1999, 2000).

The last time the event was held at Carnoustie was 1999 when Paul Lawrie won a playoff against 1997 winner Justin Leonard and Jean van de Velde. The trio got in at plus-six, but the tournament is most famous for Van de Velde's horrible collapse on the 72nd hole.

 

I've had a day or two to think about this British Open and now feel ready to make this somewhat bold statement - I think this was his greatest major victory since the Masters in 1997.

I can be more critical of Tiger Woods than anyone on the planet and my beliefs have some merit. Either Woods doesn't recognize his sociological impact on not just golf or sports, but the world, or he doesn't acknowledge it. Either one is borderline irresponsible.

 

That all changed Sunday afternoon. After winning, Woods could not stop crying. Or hugging caddy Steve Williams in what might have been the most awkward male- to-male contact since "Oz" went off the air. It all had to do with dad.

 

He couldn't help himself on Sunday. I count myself among the fortunate because my dad is alive and well, driving my mom crazy and complaining about the high price of everything.
